About
Dr. Carl Shen completed his Bachelor of Medical Sciences at Western University followed by his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Toronto. He subsequently undertook his residency training in ophthalmology at McMaster University, where he served as chief resident and graduated with highest academic standing. With the support of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Detweiler Travelling Fellowship, he completed his training with a two-year surgical and medical retina fellowship at the University of Alberta, the first vitreoretinal fellowship surgery program in Canada to be approved as an Area of Focused Competency with the Royal College.
Dr. Shen is extremely excited to return to Kitchener Waterloo to establish the surgical retina program at St. Mary’s Hospital. His goal is to provide the highest quality of clinical care and improve access for retina patients in Kitchener Waterloo and the surrounding communities. Dr. Shen is extensively trained in the management all medical and surgical diseases of the retina (see Clinical Interests). Dr. Shen has a passion for research and written and presented over 50 scientific publication and presentations in academic journals as well as at national and international conferences. He is motivated to play a role in the education of medical students and resident trainees.
Clinical Interests
Surgical Retina: retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreomacular traction, lens complications and secondary intraocular lenses, complex cataracts, ocular trauma, and more
Medical Retina: Retinal lasers, intravitreal injections, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal artery/vein occlusions, central serous chorioretinopathy, choroidal tumors, intermediate and posterior uveitis, and more
