What To Expect In Clinic

A valid referral from a healthcare practitioner is required to be seen in our clinic. Please speak with your primary eye care provider, usually an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist, to determine if a referral to a retina specialist is required.

New Patients

What To Bring To The Appointment:

  • Health card
  • Corrective glasses for accurate vision assessment
  • Current list of medications
  • Family doctor and optometrist contact information
  • Sunglasses (optional, may decrease sensitivity to light after dilation)

Appointment Duration:
Typical new appointments may require 1-2 hours including intake, vision screening, diagnostics, pupil dilation, and consultation

Pupil Dilation:
All new patients will typically have both eyes dilated to allow for full assessment of the retina. Pupil dilation can last from 4-6 hours after your appointment. You may experience blurry vision and increased sensitivity to light during this time.

Drivers:
After pupil dilation, the vision up close may be blurry and the eyes more sensitive to light. Some patients feel comfortable driving after dilation, however, others may feel more comfortable with a driver. If you have not experienced pupil dilation and driving previously, it is recommended to bring a driver

Attendees:
It is encouraged that all members of the patient’s party(family members, substitute decision makers, translators, etc) whom the patient wants to hear the medical information from the doctor be in attendance in the exam room when seeing the doctor

Follow Up Patients

Depending on your condition, you may undergo several of the same tests from your initial visit. Additional testing may be required if your status has changed or if further information is needed.

If you’re returning for treatment, specific pre-treatment tests will be conducted to ensure the best possible care. Usually this is limited to a new set of OCT photos, vision screening, an eye pressure check and dilation, but this will vary based on the patient.

Pupil Dilation:
For patients with retinal issues only in one eye, they may request only the affected eye be dilated. Patients receiving injections in only one eye will have only the injection eye dilated. If there is any possibility both eyes will need to be examined, it is best that both eyes be dilated. Pupil dilation can last from 4-6 hours after your appointment. You may experience blurry vision and increased sensitivity to light during this time.
